#1 Sustainable Packaging: in a recent study of consumers, 94% said that they wanted manufacturers and retailers to make an effort to reduce plastic packaging. The growing concern means that a focus on the reduction or elimination of plastic is important, 72% of respondents are willing to pay more for sustainably packaged goods. The research shows 52% of respondents are willing to pay 10% more and 28% are willing to pay 21-30% more.

#2 E-Commerce Packaging : in One study, 119 items from internet retailers were ordered to assess the suitability of online sellers’ packaging. The results showed that 15% were dented, 8% were crushed, 8% were ripped, and 4% had been opened or tampered with. E-commerce packaging is also notoriously wasteful. A recent petition that was sent to Amazon, asking them to adopt waste-free packaging, has received more than 95,000 signatures.

#3 Packaging With a Purpose: Designing packaging that drives a benefit should be a key objective of manufacturers. Packaging that is designed with a purpose beyond protection and transportation.

#4 Functional Packaging - packaging that provides functions such as freshness, ease of use, sustainability, convenience, flexibility, and/or protection. Consumers want packaging that provides a beneficial second use that can have a second life that supersedes the life of a product
